South Dakota Legislature, really?

South Dakota, I-90
So, what does one do when your flights are canceled due to a national blizzard and you find yourself with few hours to spare. Rant about the political state of South Dakota, obviously.

First off, the great Sodak legislature has produced ANOTHER abortion ban. Now, seeing as we did vote against an full out ban in 2006 and 2008 (read as twice defeated), Roger Hunt apparently thinks we're playing best of five or something... so we're going for banning abortion, round three. This time, however, HB1217 not a full out ban, just a 72 hour waiting period and a host of other mandates for women who find themselves in such a situation. Granted, we should not expect anything else when Ms. Noem is running around DC on Sodak's behalf trying to limit rape to "forcible rape." Meaning, that this would prevent the government helping pay for abortions in the cases of sexual assault which includes date rape sitations.

Clearly, this state is a huge fan of women's rights. But the best part of all of this is that it has completely fallen by the wayside due to the one and only Hal Wick (also a champion of limiting women's rights)...

So Mr. Wick thought of this brilliant idea that he was going to introduce a bill the would require all Sodak residents over the age of 21 to own a firearm. Now HB1237 says this is to provide self-defense for the individual and themselves (think Switzerland?) but Wick came out and said that this bill was actually introduced to make an example of the Affordable Care Act. If you want to argue the legality of the ACA, by all means, go ahead. BUT please stop wasting the state's time, press, and money with worthless pieces of legislation. There are obviously more important issues, like the one above or the fact that our great governor has proposed a ten percent budget cut, which is going to include education. Hal, I don't believe your constituents elected you to make Sodak the punch line for the nation because oh, right... we already were that last year when Noem and friends passed a bill to teach global warming not as hard science but also due to "astrological and cosmological" effects. Obviously, we can really afford that 10% cut to our education.

On a different note, perhaps if we were willing to invest a little more in education, we could have effective sex-ed so less women were in a situation where they felt abortion was their only option AND we could have educational programs that promoted healthy lifestyles and eating habits, which would reduce Medicaid costs.

Or maybe I have no idea what I'm even talking about. Either way, call/write/email your state legislators. I also know that Noem's DC office (202-225-2801) loves it when you all and ask questions about issues/votes/etc. Now, back to being stranded, TED Talks, downloading Daytrotter sessions and Atlas Shrugged.
